Connection & Longevity

By: Monika Mehrens, DO, February 26, 2026

In my office at Northwest Wellness Center, you will see a series of abstract art framed on my wall. I painted these several years ago, inspired by the joy and beauty of connection and how it is an essential part of our human experience.

While I didn’t realize it at the time, connection and a sense of belonging are key components of longevity and healthy living.

The science now strongly supports what many of us intuitively know:

We are wired for connection.

A landmark meta-analysis published in PLOS Medicine found that strong social relationships are associated with a 50% increased likelihood of survival — an effect comparable to quitting smoking and greater than the impact of obesity or physical inactivity.

In contrast, chronic loneliness and social isolation significantly increase the risk of:

  • Heart disease

  • Cognitive decline

  • Depression

  • Stroke

  • Premature death

In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory in 2023 declaring loneliness and isolation a public health epidemic, citing increased risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, anxiety, and early mortality.

Human touch and positive social interaction stimulate the release of oxytocin and dopamine — neurochemicals that promote bonding, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, lower blood pressure, and support immune function.

From a physiologic perspective, connection quite literally calms and protects the body.

Most of us find connection in nature, our pets, or a hobby (for me, it’s art). But not all of us are naturally comfortable with human connection. Sometimes we need to step outside our comfort zone, push our boundaries, and intentionally create opportunities to engage.

Treat yourself to a massage.
Drop into a Wednesday pickleball game in Lithia Park.
Join a strength training class.
Meet up with Dr. Gordon and the other rowers on Emigrant Lake.
Join an art club (I’m in three!).
Say yes to the invitation.

Longevity is not only about advanced biomarker testing, biohacking with peptides, or hormone optimization.

It is also about belonging.

The simple, powerful act of connecting — with others and with purpose — may be one of the most accessible and transformative longevity tools we have.

Happy Love Month!
